In September 2017, after three years of hard work, we finally signed the contract for the new property, Finca Alicia, and were able to purchase it. The property is adjacent to the existing protected area and thus offers the opportunity to connect it with nearby forests and extend the anteater’s migration routes.

IGS Nordend also knows how long the road has been – as it had already contributed so much money with its first donation in 2014 that 1 ha of new land could be acquired. We are now in the planning phase as to where exactly the “IGS hectare” could be located on Finca Alicia.
In addition, two further donations were made by the pupils in the following years, which were also used for reforestation and important environmental education measures in the project area. We would like to take this opportunity to once again say a huge thank you to the students who supported us and their dedicated teaching staff – without you it might never have worked!
The first step is to carry out a precise survey of the new site in order to define what type of vegetation the areas currently have and then use this scientific basis to decide which areas should be reforested.
Half of the open areas are to be reforested in the traditional way with purchased seedlings, the other half with a special variety. The seedlings for the “special variety” cannot be bought from the current nursery nearby, so they are to be grown in a separate nursery. A comparison between the two reforestation methods will be made later.
