The species-rich forests of Monte Alto were massively deforested in the middle of the 20th century to meet the high demand for beef. By 1976, all but 2 percent of the forest areas had fallen victim to livestock farming. The natural water cycle began to falter and the Rio Nosara, an important source of water for the local population, dried up.
