The consumption of tropical fruit in Germany contributes to climate change in several ways. It is not only the long transportation routes from Costa Rica to Frankfurt that make tropical fruits such as pineapples a climate pest. Although CO2 emissions from ships and, in particular, aircraft contribute significantly to climate change, local agricultural cultivation is also a decisive factor in terms of sustainability. In Costa Rica, pineapples in particular are grown in large-scale monocultures, which pose a threat to native animals such as the soldier macaw and the anteater.
With its projects in Costa Rica, Tropica Verde is committed to preserving the rainforest, which is increasingly falling victim to plantations. In view of the threat of habitat loss, rainforest protection and reforestation are creating corridors that ensure sufficient movement for the animals. In Frankfurt, the educational module “The macaw and the pineapple” raises awareness of the problems associated with fruit consumption.
