Since 2014, we have been supporting school projects, excursions into the rainforest and workshops in 3 nearby schools on the subject of the environment and sustainability in our project to protect the rainforest in Baja Talamanca together with our local partner Asociación Córredor Biológico Talamanca-Caribe, ACBTC.
On 20.03. the first workshop of the year took place in the auditorium of the “Schule Kleiner Strand” (= Escuela Playa Chiquita). It was about the importance of the forest for wildlife – so they talked about wild animals, domestic animals – and the domestic animals that become wild animals through their owners. For example, abandoned dogs pose a major problem for sloths, which have to leave their trees to cross the (unfortunately increasing number of) roads. On the ground, they are no longer camouflaged and their slowness makes them a meal for the often ravenous dogs.
However, it was not only about problems, but the many important activities of the forest were also discussed. The children learned about the many different ecosystem services provided by the forest that are important for humans, animals and plants.
