Environmental education in Monte Alto

In 2017, the environmental education measures we supported reached a total of 10 schools and 216 pupils from the immediate vicinity of the Monte Alto protected area. Some school classes have visited the project on site to see for themselves how successful the reforestation has been and to learn about native plant species. Other schools were visited by representatives of Fundacion Monte Alto to talk to pupils about topics such as integrated waste management in households, sustainable purchasing, climate change and sustainable development. Recognizing environmental problems and learning how to solve them are essential building blocks for environmental education. For example, the children learn how to restore a river that has been polluted with solid or liquid waste.

Through environmental education, we pursue the goal of long-term, effective environmental protection in the region. Increased awareness of the impact of deforestation, for example, makes a decisive contribution to reducing poaching and logging in the long term. In 2018, we therefore want to continue to actively promote environmental education in Monte Alto and are working on new needs and priorities.
