Biochar – How biochar improves soils and protects the climate
Turning plant waste into valuable charcoal – and actively doing something for the climate at the same time? This is exactly what biochar, also known as biochar, makes possible. This potential became particularly tangible for our volunteers at the Finca Curré near Thierry, in the region around Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica.
On site, they learned about the practical production of Biochar: from collecting suitable biomass to pyrolysis and activation with natural substances. The focus was not only on the technical process, but also on understanding the ecological significance – and direct contact with tropical nature and local stakeholders.
The experiences on site show impressively: sharing knowledge, getting involved, experiencing it for yourself – this is how change happens. Biochar is not just a technology, but a symbol of a regenerative way of thinking that connects people and nature.
Doch wie genau stellt man Biochar her? Welche Rohstoffe eignen sich? Und warum sollte man die Kohle vor dem Einsatz „aktivieren“?
In diesem Artikel erfährst du:
-
wie Biochar funktioniert und wirkt,
-
wie sie hergestellt und richtig angewendet wird,
-

What is Biochar?
Biochar is a carbon-rich material that is produced by the pyrolysis of organic biomass such as wood, plant residues or liquid manure in the absence of oxygen. Unlike conventional charcoal, biochar is not burned, but is primarily used for soil improvement, carbon sequestration and environmental protection.
Thanks to its porous structure, Biochar improves water and nutrient retention in the soil, promotes soil life and can help to permanently reduce CO₂ levels in the atmosphere. It is also used in animal husbandry, wastewater treatment and the circular economy. Biochar is considered a promising measure in the fight against climate change.
CO2 COMPENSATION
Would you like to do something for climate and environmental protection by offsetting CO2? Then find out here how you can effectively protect the climate with Tropica Verde.
Very important: In order to protect the climate, the top priority should be to avoid emissions. In concrete terms, this means, among other things:- Turn the heaters down a few degrees
- Energy-efficient renovation of houses
- Remove electrical appliances from standby
- only eat meat occasionally
- Use more bicycles or public transport and walk
- much more!
