The tropical rainforest is one of the most species-rich and at the same time most threatened habitats on our planet. Protecting it in the long term requires not only political will, but also awareness and knowledge – from an early age.
Tropica Verde provides free educational materials to help learn more about tropical ecosystems, their importance and the challenges of nature conservation. Whether in the classroom or at home, these materials invite you to discover and understand the rainforest and its fascinating diversity – and to work together for its future. We promote education for sustainable development – open to all, without barriers. Because only through free access to knowledge can a responsible approach to the rainforest, the environment and the future succeed.
Because only those who understand can protect. And education is the first step.

Production and activation of biochar (biochar)

Turning plant waste into valuable coal – and actively doing something for the climate at the same time? This is exactly what Biochar, also known as biochar, makes possible. The experiences in our project show: Sharing knowledge, taking action, experiencing it for yourself – this is how change happens. Biochar is not just a technology, but a symbol of a regenerative way of thinking that connects people and nature.
Besonders greifbar wurde dieses Potenzial für unsere Volontär:innen auf unserer Finca Curré bei Thierry, in der Region um Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica. Vor Ort erlernten die praktische Herstellung von Biochar: vom Sammeln geeigneter Biomasse über die Pyrolyse bis hin zur Aktivierung mit natürlichen Stoffen. Dabei stand nicht nur der technische Prozess im Fokus, sondern auch das Verständnis für die ökologische Bedeutung – und der direkte Kontakt zur tropischen Natur und den lokalen Akteuren.
Doch wie genau stellt man Biochar her? Welche Rohstoffe eignen sich? Und warum sollte man die Kohle vor dem Einsatz „aktivieren“?

Significance of the privately protected area "Finca Curré" in south-eastern Costa Rica

This master’s thesis from 2016 by Lina Thomas – now on the board of Tropica Verde – is dedicated to our private reserve Finca Curré in the Talamanca-Caribe biological corridor in Costa Rica. Lina traveled to Costa Rica with Tropica Verde’s support to write a scientific analysis of the situation on and around our project area.
For the first time, well-founded mapping, interviews and data evaluations are being used to make the key ecological role of the area visible. The results are alarming. Deforestation, road construction and pressure from settlements are not only endangering the area, but also 14 endangered vertebrate species.
The work impressively demonstrates why active, community-based nature conservation is more necessary today than ever before – and provides concrete recommendations for action.
This Master’s thesis is an exciting, well-founded contribution that clearly marks the path from research to the practice of international nature conservation.
The thesis is also a personal example of international networking and how the support of Tropica Verde can turn from student to long-term commitment as a board member!

Alemania, Costa Rica y Panama. El articulo fue escrito por Profesora Dr. Meike Piepenbring, Fausto López & Orlando Cáceres. Prof. Dr. Piepenbring es una colaboradora alemana muy cercana a Tropica Verde y ha estado en Costa Rica muchas veces.
El artículo fue publicado en el Puente Biologico (2016) 8: 57-70.

El bosque y el funcionamiento de su ecosistema tropical son necesario para el flujo de agua de toda la zona, incluyendo la población. Víctor Esquivel creció en zona alrededor de Monte Alto, fue voluntario y escribió su trabajo final
para la universidad en y sobre Monte Alto. Después el trabajó en el ambito de reforestación e educación ambiental en Monte Alto, apoyado por Tropica Verde.

Inventario de Quirópteros de la Reserva Natural Monte Alto

La tesina ofrece datos valiosos y pioneros sobre la diversidad de murciélagos en un área poco estudiada de Costa Rica. Es una lectura esencial para estudiantes, investigadores y conservacionistas interesados en biodiversidad tropical y monitoreo ecológico. Victor Esquivel lo escribio para obtener el diplomado en
Manejo Forestal y Vida Silvestre de la Universidad Técnica Nacional de Costa Rica. El creció alrededor de Monte Alto, fue voluntario y trabajó en Monte Alto después.
Este trabajo presenta el primer inventario de murciélagos (quirópteros) realizado en la Reserva Natural Monte Alto, Costa Rica, entre septiembre y noviembre de 2013. Se registraron 17 especies pertenecientes a 10 géneros y 3 familias en cuatro hábitats distintos, revelando diferencias notables en la distribución de las especies según el tipo de ecosistema.
