Do you have an idea for preserving and promoting urban biodiversity in Frankfurt? Then take part in the 2025 ideas competition and be one of three projects whose idea will be implemented with a total of 30,000 euros in funding.
The competition
The promotion of urban biodiversity opens up the opportunity to consider and combine key future issues such as food security, climate protection and climate adaptation. In order to effectively counteract the decline in biodiversity in Frankfurt, BioFrankfurt is calling for creative, exemplary and sustainable projects to be submitted. These should not only strengthen urban biodiversity, but also make its value for people and the environment visible and thus have an impact on urban society.
Who organizes the competition?
The ideas competition is organized by the BioFrankfurt network including all members. The ideas competition is organized by the BioFrankfurt network, which currently has 13 member institutions from the fields of nature conservation, science and education. The BioFrankfurt network is supported by the Department for Climate, Environment and Women of the City of Frankfurt, the Polytechnische Gesellschaft Foundation and Frankfurter Sparkasse.
What kind of ideas are you looking for?
The aim is to promote small projects from urban society that focus on the common good. We are looking for feasible projects that preserve and promote urban biodiversity in Frankfurt in an exemplary, creative and effective way. The project should be implemented in summer 2026. Educational offers that inspire enthusiasm for biodiversity are also welcome.
How is the jury made up?
The jury for the Biodiversity 2025/2026 ideas competition consists of the Polytechnische Gesellschaft Foundation, the German Olympic Sports Confederation, Frankfurter Sparkasse, the Environmental Agency, Frankfurt Zoological Society, Senckenberg, and Goethe University/Senckenberg.
How high are the subsidies?
The competition is worth a total of EUR 30,000, which is provided by Frankfurter Sparkasse. In addition, there is the knowledge and support of BioFrankfurt members.
- 1st place: EUR 15,000
- 2nd place: EUR 10,000
- 3rd place: 5000 EUR
Who can apply & how does it work?

Applications must be submitted by October 22, 2025.
Who can take part?
Individuals, associations, school classes or project groups can take part – as long as the project is not yet funded by the city and no employee of the organizing network is involved.
How does the competition work?
Projects can be submitted online until October 22, 2025. In winter 2025, 10 projects will be selected and published in a shortlist, which will then be examined in more detail. The selected projects will then develop a detailed concept. A workshop will be held in January 2026 to support the development of these concepts. In spring 2026, the three winning projects will be chosen at an award ceremony in the Palmengarten and the implementation phase will begin.
