The survey of our recently acquired property – Finca Alicia – is now complete and Victor, the Costa Rican forestry engineer who has been commissioned with the reforestation, has developed a plan for the reforestation: The 1.5 hectares to be planted will be divided into 3 areas. Each area is to be reforested differently. Why? The aim is to find out which reforestation method contributes most quickly and best to restoring the natural forest vegetation.
The three variants are as follows: 1st area: Plant purchased native tree seedlings in parallel rows.
The two other areas are to be planted with tree seedlings specially grown in Monte Alto. A separate tree nursery was set up for this purpose. Viktor has already started. The tree nursery is already showing its first tender shoots. While the tree seedlings on area 2 are planted in a zigzag pattern in the “chicken foot” model, small island plantings are created on area 3.
We are excited to see which method will deliver the best results and would like to take this opportunity to thank all donors for the trees donated so far!
Now it’s time to collect enough donations for the next “Arbor Day” so that the local schoolchildren can all help plant the trees together.
