Year 5 visit to the Palmengarten Frankfurt – a tropical voyage of discovery with Tropica Verde

On Wednesday and Thursday, May 7 and 8, 2025, our Year 5 class went on an exciting excursion to the Palmengarten Frankfurt. This special experience – the rainforest rally – was organized and financed by the Tropica Verde association from Frankfurt. The non-profit organization has been committed to protecting tropical rainforests for over 30 years and is also heavily involved in environmental education in schools.
Discover fascinating plant worlds
An exciting journey through different climate zones and plant worlds awaited the pupils in the palm garden. In small groups, they explored the flower and butterfly house, where they were able to observe colorful tropical butterflies.
Particularly impressive was the Tropicarium – a collection of 14 interconnected show houses – which depicts various tropical habitats, including rainforests, mangroves and dry forests. Here the children encountered unusual plants such as the cocoa tree, lianas, orchids and the baobab tree.
Learning with all the senses: The Tropicarium rally
A highlight of the excursion was the rally through the Tropicarium. The children learned through play and with great curiosity how the rainforest is structured, which plant species grow there and what significance they have for the global climate (-> Education for sustainable development).
By actively participating, the pupils were not only able to deepen their knowledge, but also develop it independently. The direct contact with the plant world promoted vivid, sustainable learning – far beyond the classroom.
A lasting memory to take away
The small gift that each child received at the end was also particularly sustainable: a goodie bag with fair trade chocolate and plant seeds. The seeds will now be planted together in class, the growth process documented and entered into a wildflower competition.
