Feeding trees for exotic bird species

We regularly look for rare and native tree seeds in and around the Reserva Kinkajou. The aim is to germinate these seeds and then grow them in our on-site nursery for 3-8 months, depending on the tree species. If they are robust enough, they are planted in open areas in the Reserva and cultivated for 1-2 years. After that, they are usually strong enough to grow into stately trees.

Our partner Pedro Mendez Tam from the nearby Yatama Lodge shows the treatment of the seeds of two native tree species that were collected in mid-April:

One of these is the Poro tree (Erythrina poeppigian). This tree grows up to 35 m high and has beautiful red flowers. As it provides shade and fixes nitrogen, it also helps the natural colonization of other tree species in the surrounding area. Its seeds and flowers are popular with parrots and oropendulas (Montezuma’s starlings), among others. Seven different parrot species alone have been observed feeding on the Poro trees in the Reserva Kinkajou. The Montezuma’s forehead bird is known for its far-sounding call in the rainforest and for its large, woven nests that hang from the branches. The second tree species is the Manu tree, which grows up to 25 meters high and has one of the hardest woods in the rainforest. It is protected and may no longer be felled in Costa Rica without a special permit. Its round, fleshy fruits are highly prized by tree chickens (red-bellied guans), toucans and also great soldier macaws.

In order to ensure the preservation and spread of such native tree species, regular inspections must be carried out, as the seeds can only be found on the ground at a certain time of year. They must then be collected quickly and germinated.

With this work, Tropica Verde and Yatama Lodge are jointly contributing to the conservation of biodiversity on the Reserva Kinkajou.
