Last weekend, the Green Exchange took place in the Palmengarten Frankfurt with the theme “City Land Wilderness”. Once again this year, we had an attractive stand at the trade fair organized by BioFrankfurt and were able to get many people interested in our projects in Costa Rica and Germany through various hands-on activities and interesting discussions.
Our theme at this year’s stand was “Why does wilderness sometimes need a jump start?”. In Monte Alto, in the northwest of Costa Rica, large areas of tropical forest have been cleared for cattle farming. Forest loss has a negative impact on the climate, biodiversity and local people. We were able to educate and reach many visitors about this topic at the Green Exchange. To rebuild the wilderness in Monte Alto, it is not enough to leave nature to its own devices. Our support through tree planting is needed because African pasture grass – an invasive non-native plant species – is spreading too quickly in the area and inhibiting the growth of trees.
